Photographing Barrie at Night

Overcoming My Reluctance
For years, I avoided night photography. There was always a reason to pack up my camera before sunset—the complexity of manual settings, the fear of noise-riddled images, and the uncertainty of working in low light. Night photography demands a different skill set entirely, one that requires patience, technical knowledge, and a willingness to experiment with settings that daylight photographers rarely touch. It felt safer to stay in my comfort zone, capturing Barrie’s beauty during golden hour when the light was forgiving and predictable. But eventually, curiosity won out over hesitation, and I’m grateful it did.
A City Transformed
The first time I ventured out to photograph Barrie after dark, I was struck by how the city transforms. The waterfront around Kempenfelt Bay, so familiar in daylight, becomes something almost magical when the lamps reflect off the still waters, and the path lights create leading lines along the shoreline. Dunlop Street takes on a new energy at night—the storefronts glow with warmth, the historic architecture gains depth from strategic lighting, and a vibrant atmosphere makes it perfect for street photography. Spirit Catcher, that iconic sculpture on the waterfront, stands dramatically silhouetted against the night sky or illuminated in ways that seem to shift with the seasons. The city is intimate at night, a quieter version of itself that reveals details easily overlooked during the bustle of day.

Mastering the Technical Challenges
The technical challenges that once intimidated me became part of the appeal. Night photography taught me to truly understand the exposure triangle—how ISO, aperture, and shutter speed work together in ways that matter infinitely more when every photon of light counts. I learned that a sturdy tripod isn’t optional equipment but essential, that shooting in RAW format gives you the latitude to recover shadow detail that would be lost in JPEG, and that manual focus often beats autofocus when contrast is low. The cold Barrie winters added another layer of difficulty—keeping batteries warm, preventing lens fog, and working with gloves that still allow you to adjust tiny dials. Each obstacle overcome felt like levelling up as a photographer.

Discovering Hidden Gems
What surprised me most was discovering locations I’d never considered photographing before. The Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery, with its distinctive signage and warm interior glow spilling onto the street, creates a welcoming beacon that makes for compelling urban shots. The Barrie City Hall fountain takes on an ethereal quality at night, especially in winter when ice formations catch the coloured lights. The rail yard near the waterfront, industrial and unremarkable by day, becomes a study in leading lines and urban geometry under sodium vapour lights. Even the quieter sections along the bay offer opportunities for long exposures that turn the water into glass and capture reflections of city lights. Night photography forced me to see my city differently, to look for light sources rather than lit subjects, and to embrace darkness as part of the composition rather than something to be eliminated.

The Reward of Pushing Boundaries
Now, some of my favourite images are from those night shoots. There’s something deeply satisfying about coming home with a memory card full of long exposures, knowing that you’ve captured something that can’t be seen with the naked eye—light trails from cars on Dunlop Street, star trails over the frozen bay, or the subtle colour shifts in the sky long after sunset. The skill set that once seemed so daunting now feels like a creative superpower. If you’ve been reluctant to try night photography in Barrie, I understand the hesitation completely. But I encourage you to push past it. Bring your tripod, dress warmly, and give yourself permission to experiment and fail. The city has been here all along, waiting to show you its after-dark secrets. You just need to be willing to stay out past your comfort zone to see them.
